Sewing is definitely not my area of expertise, but I am a passionate crafter (at heart) who as long as I can remember, has always loved spending hours in fabric shops, scanning through all the rolls on display and then suddenly being fixated on one (or a few) design and imagining all the lovely things I could attempt to make with that lovely piece of fabric. Then as I reached University and the more 'serious' stuff began, I suddenly had to think of my future (because when you're 15 you are well and truly prepared to do so!). To cut a long boring story short, I qualified as a Charted Accountant some time in the mid 90's, for some that is a dream, for me it was a struggle - as I proceeded through each stage of my career from gaining a degree, getting work experience in some 'big' name companies and finally doing my professional exams, I hoped that I would find passion in that industry so that I would finally feel excitement in my career. No way.
Almost 10 years later, I rediscovered craft and brought it back into my life in drips and drabs. The more I do, the more I wish I had seen the potential in craft and followed my dream...
So when I spent an hour on Saturday at a pattern making demonstration at the lovely Rathdowne Fabrics it was like going down memory lane.. like a kid in a lolly shop, like a builder at Bunnings.. I didn't want to leave, I wanted to look at the remnants, the lace, the buttons, I wanted to mix and match the fabrics, I wanted to follow my dream with an endless amount of money to fund all my creations and ideas..
I try not to regret, I do believe everything happens for a reason. My career path has opened alot of doors and I have gained alot.. but I will always hold onto my dream in the hope that the combination of both what has happened, and what I would love to happen will turn into something amazing - for me.
And yes, there was one roll of treasure at Rathdownes which I could not get away from no matter how many laps I did around the shop (and there were a few!). It was beaufitul, a lovely grey subtle tweed wool blend with flecks of bright colours.. perfect for winter coats for little girls..
